First ride to Dearford Lake of the New Year

Having been on my new turbo trainer yesterday, I was desperate to get out on a real ride. The trainer was really good fun, especially when used in conjunction with Zwift and Bkool to ride with other virtual riders, but nothing beats the real thing and the feel of wind in your hair.

The weather was a bit warmer today too, so I knew I had to get out for my usual 55 mile route to the lovely cafe at Dearnford Lake, near Whitchurch as it was forecast to go back to just above freezing for the rest of the week.

I had a nice ride up to the cafe stop, but with the wind full on in my face, so this slowed me down somewhat. I managed to bag a nice comfy armchair to have my latte and hummingbird cake (“like a carrot cake but with sparkly bits on top” I was told!).

The rest of the ride was really enjoyable too, with the highlight being bumping into Andy Sowka from the club outside a house on the slope up to Sutton, near the Four Alls pub. I stopped for a chat and to catch up, before carrying on my route.

Passing through Newport I stopped in Nova Cycles for a chat with Neil about gear choices for my Gran Canaria trip at the end of this month, before a sneaky pint of Blonde in the New Inn.

A great ride which was thoroughly enjoyable.
