Day 1: Gran Canaria – travelling

Like last year, we’d booked to go cycling in Gran Canaria for a week, so as to escape the horrible January weather at home. There were five of us on the tip this year: Tim, John, Nicole, Tracy and me.

We’d arrived at the ‘luxurious’ Ibis hotel at Birmingham airport the night before and met up for a few drinks and a meal out. The food was a bit iffy but the cocktails were spot on and had most of my favourite US cocktails.

In the morning we all met at reception early and walked over to the terminal to check in. This was soon done and I was glad to drop off my bike box (was taking my Dogma F8 this year).

After clearing security we headed off for some well-deserved breakfast. I was mega nervous by this stage as my daughter was having her driving test at 9:17 this morning and I wanted to know if she had passed before we took off.

Thankfully the text arrived to say she had passed just before the plane pushed back. Phew! I can start to enjoy my holiday now!

Four hours and forty minutes later we arrived in Gran Canaria and breezed through the airport and on to our transfer coach to our hotel, the Lopesan Baobab in Meloneras.

No cycling today as 3 of the group are renting bikes and not picking them up until the morning, so we met for a few drinks in the hotel and then went down to the front to watch the sunset from the K1 bar.

A while later we returned to the hotel and had our evening meal at the hotel buffet restaurant (we were staying half board so all breakfasts and evening meals were included).
